Choice.

The freedom to have a choice is one of great independence but it can also be a tremendous hinderance.

Do you ever find yourself, for instance, perusing a book store and finding yourself taking so long that you eventually end up making a rushed decision or forbid, leave the shop with no purchase? Too much choice encumbers our senses to the point where we just can’t make a decision.

Having choice is a great thing and I would rather have it, than not. It does make me think however about the way content is distributed to the masses and if there is any better, more personalised or segregated way in which this can be achieved.

With all this said, I could spend hours in a book store with a coffee in-hand quite happily anyway. Perhaps I need to become a book store clerk.

Diary of a Writer: Post 1

Do I consider myself a writer, yes and no.

Do I feel like I should write more, definitely.

Do I feel like I should be writing right now, instead of writing this blog post, absolutely.

Isn’t that the problem that a lot of writers face though? The constant lure of procrastination. Especially with someone who has the attention span of a goldfish, I can vouch that it is a rather difficult task to maintain my focus or even get a few words down from day-to-day, but we must try.

I begin this new line of posts in the hope of continuing them and voicing the range of obstacles that may come my way. Thus, I suspect, being feelings of self-doubt, self-loathing and perhaps the occasional tear (lets hope not). Hopefully though, this will also be spread with moments of inspiration and passion.

Keep tuned.

Chapter 9 – The Second Time Around.

When I decided to move onto the second draft of my novel, my story did not have a definitive ending. I am glad to say however that from working on the second draft, refining the plot and creating additional content, an ending is now clear and is actually rather exciting (to me, at least).

As I progress the second draft, I feel myself becoming more confident. The overall feeling and depth of the book have matured somewhat in parts and with it, I feel it is now a little more-rounded. Although, a lot of work is still to do.

With this, the character arcs are all developing nicely too and I am beginning to feel a real connection with the characters and to an extent, the locations brought to life.

May the writing process continue, as it will certainly never end…

A Writer’s Journey – On Pause

The existing story i have been writing across the past couple of months has now been put on hold whilst i consider the avenue in which to take it. Whilst i have not given up on the story, i find myself becoming bored with its direction and if i am feeling that way, i can only think of what the reader might think too.

With NaNoWriMo in full swing, my attention has therefore swung to that instead and with it, a new project (if only temporary). Even if i don’t reach the target, i feel it is good to get involved with something that, as a community, most of us get involved with. This will then hopefully lend well to re-ignite inspiration for my work for going forward.

A writer’s day is never done. Whilst you may not be writing, you are continually thinking of what to write next.

Where Do You Write?

It may seem like where we write isn’t too important, but surely as writer’s we need to write in places that do their best to inspire us. At this moment, I am staring out of the window at the washing on the line, perhaps not the greatest locale, or perhaps I will write a gripping story about said washing. I doubt it.

So where do you write and why do you feel it helps you n your craft? Do you feel that the locale isn’t that important?

Great places to write could be in a library, or maybe in a coffee shop, amongst the hustle and bustle of passers-by. In that case however, I always try to source a corner seat. I don’t want any strangers prying on my work, especially if it’s the first draft..
